Agronomy

Agronomy is the science, economics, and application of soil and plant production with a strong emphasis in land management.

It is the development and practical application of plant and soil sciences to produce abundant, high-quality food, feed, and fiber crops.

It incorporates the basic sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, geology, microbiology, etc.) into an applied science which is the foundation for most agriculture.

Soil science involves not only those aspects which relate to crop production but also environmental aspects of soil management. This scientific area is concerned with a wide variety of specialized topics.

  • Soil analysis and modification
  • Rural and urban land utilization
  • Production of food, feed, fiber, oil, and turf crops
  • The protection of our environment
  • Selective breeding of plants
  • Irrigation
  • Plant physiology
  • Weed and pest control
  • Chemical, physical and biological properties of soils
  • Efficient production with environmental protection

The challenge for the agronomist therefore, is to understand, manage and protect earth’s vital resources as well as using science and natural resources to sustain food supply and environmental issues.
